An extremely robust and vigorous bicolor Baptisia, selected from a controlled cross of Baptisia (australis x sphaerocarpa) conducted by Dr. Jim Ault at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe, Illinois. Three-year-old plants produce upward of a hundred flowering stems covered with deep violet-purple flowers highlighted by lemon-yellow keels. The inflorescences are held above the handsome blue-green foliage and can be up to 32" long. This selection began flowering its second year in the ground (from a 4" pot). Blooms are long lasting, beginning in late May and continuing through the first few weeks of June. The flowers fade to a lovely violet-purple. Mature plants measure 3' to 5' tall and 4' to 5' wide.
USDA Zones 4 to 8.
