Unlike all the complex hybrids of false indigos being introduced by Chicagoland Grows® under the Prairieblues™ series, ‘Blue Mound’ is a selected form of the popular false blue indigo species, Baptisia australis.‘Blue Mound’ was developed by crossing the larger B. australis var. australis with the more compact B. australis var. minor. This vigorous selection is intermediate in size to both parents but with the heavier blooming of the B. australis var. australis and the more uniform broad rounded habit and finer foliage of the B. australis var. minor.
The dusty violet-blue flowers are borne above the attractive blue-green foliage from late May into mid- June (USDA Zone 5). This selection forms a season-long, perfectly uniform mound that you will think was sheared! The original plant (10 years old) was 43" tall x 60" wide in early summer and 14" wider by late autumn in 2010. Should be quite adaptable.
USDA Zones 4b to 7b at least. Introduction #CG09-004. Developed by Dr. Jim Ault at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe, Illinois.
